The Secret Life of Movies

A boldly visual book that shares the secrets behind some of the world's greatest movies.

I was thrilled to be asked by Octopus Publishing to design and illustrate the new book from Den of Geek founder Simon Brew. Revealing easter eggs, hidden details and little known facts, The Secret Life of Movies is the ultimate trivia book for film fans. This was a big undertaking, and proved to be a challenging but hugely satisfying project. As a huge movie fan myself, I couldn't wait to start bringing the pages to life and I'm super happy with the outcome.

I wanted to create a fun but considered creative direction that celebrated the heritage of cinema, complimented Simon’s movie wisdom and provided an attractive, crafted object for readers. The result is bold and engaging but features a touch of vintage. The colour scheme is lively and rich, but a little desaturated, with stark and simple illustrations featuring texture and roughened edges. Finally, the images used are also slightly desaturated, featuring additional noise to give every picture the look of a vintage classic.
